At last nightâs 77th Annual Tony Awards, Jeremy Strong became Broadwayâs newest number-one boy. The Succession star won his first Tony for best leading actor for his role in Henrik Ibsenâs An Enemy of the People, a production he previously described to GQ as âa play about the court of public opinion.â Strong accepted his award on Sunday wearing an overly shiny, carob-toned velvet shawl collar tuxedo, giving credence to a color theory the actor relayed in his own GQ cover story last year said: âMy wife told me that somebody said something like, âThe three things youâre going to be certain of are death, taxes, and that Jeremy Strong will be wearing brown.ââ A certainty, indeed.
But the element that bolstered Strongâs custom Loro Piana ensemble last night also happens to be the ascendant formalwear accessory of the season: a ribbon bow tie.
Bowed and western-style string neckties became a quirky standout on the red-carpet circuit over the last year, as seen under the collars of some of Hollywoodâs biggest new menswear stars such as Colman Domingo, Cillian Murphy, and The Bearâs Matty Matheson. Many stylish women have been wearing them, too, including Billie Eilish, who sported one with her schoolboy-ish Willy Chavarria ensemble at the 2024 Golden Globes, and Beyoncé, whose yeehaw-ready Louis Vuitton getup to this yearâs Grammys served as a future Easter egg for her then-yet-to-be-announced Americana-themed album, Cowboy Carter.
It checks out that Strong, as a generally left-of-center dresser with a demonstrated flair for unusual neck adornments, would opt for a kicky bow-tie alternative. In this case, however, he also happened to be right on trend.
âI want to thank the ushers and the front-of-house staff who see me walking in every day looking like Iâve just been run over by a truck, and see me walk out looking somehow even worse, with bits of pretzels and Aquavit in my hair,â Strong said in his Tony acceptance speech. Thankfully for all of us, Jeremy Strong cleans up like a sepia-toned dream.
