This week we revealed the Venice Architecture Biennale highlights


This week on Dezeen, we exclusively unveiled the best pavilions from this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale.

Reporting from the year’s most important architecture event, we revealed the Nordic pavilion (pictured) as well as pavilions including Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Togo in a day of exclusive online openings.

We also rounded up the 10 stand-out pavilions from the biennale.

Among the other highlights from Venice were a temporary translucent library designed by US studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro and a shimmering bridge created by Norman Foster and Porsche.

Chilean studio Elemental and building materials company Holcim also unveiled a stripped-back incremental housing prototype built from concrete made with biochar and recycled aggregate.

Meanwhile, in the UK, Selldorf Architects completed the controversial remodel of the National Gallery’s Sainsbury Wing, which was originally designed by architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.

Following the opening, critic Robert Bevan wrote that the renovation had eradicated most of the building’s postmodern charm in an opinion piece.

“The fears raised by those original renderings have been fully realised,” he said.

Also in the UK, five proposed design concepts for the Queen Elizabeth II memorial in St James’s Park were revealed.

The shortlisted concepts, which all include a bridge, were designed by teams led by Foster + Partners, Heatherwick Studio (pictured), J&L Gibbons, Tom Stuart-Smith and WilkinsonEyre.

The Thaden School was named the best building in the Americas

In other architecture news, the Thaden School in Bentonville, Arkansas, won the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize for the best building in the Americas. The school was designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects, Eskew Dumez Ripple and Andropogon Associates.

Also in North America, we rounded up the skyscrapers that are in progress in Toronto, including Frank Gehry’s “tallest residential building”.

Popular projects this week included a cave-like coastal viewpoint in China, a 1960s dental practice turned into a family home in Belgium and a Big Sur House on a bluff overlooking the ocean.
