Multifunctional spaces require optimum flooring to cater to "ever-blurring boundaries between work and leisure" says Modulyss

Promotion: optimised flooring is the key to improving the sound, look and feel of our interior spaces as they become increasingly multifunctional, says soft flooring specialist Modulyss.

The wellbeing-focused soft flooring pioneer explained that as our interior spaces become more multifunctional, they will require optimum flooring solutions to accommodate the “ever-blurring boundaries between work and leisure”.

“Today’s buildings are expected to evolve,” said Modulyss. “Whether it’s an office that becomes a co-living hub or a healthcare centre that doubles as a community space, adaptability is no longer optional – it’s the baseline.”

Modulyss creates modular carpet tiles for a range of environments spanning work, education, retail and hospitality, and works under the idea that design should “respond to human need”.

Modulyss cited a series of examples of settings that would benefit from optimised flooring, such as modular classrooms in schools and further education.

According to the brand, today’s classrooms are often reconfigured to maximise daylight and create diverse working areas to fit competing learning needs.

As a result, acoustic carpet tiles are central to ensure appropriate focus zones for every type of student, argued Modulyss.

The brand acknowledged that where some learners require subtle textures to navigate intuitively, others thrive off soft surfaces that reduce the “visual noise” that can lead to sensory overload.

Whatever the learning need, said Modulyss, sensitively designed flooring can successfully choreograph the right multifunctional space.

“Neurodiversity isn’t a niche concern – it’s a design opportunity,” said the brand, referencing its whitepaper on the subject. “It’s something that calls for smarter flooring, flexible layouts and a more empathetic approach.”

“Flooring is how we zone without walls – influence mood without words, support function without fuss,” added Modulyss.

Other examples of increasingly hybrid settings that demand “spacial fluidity” are hospitality and healthcare spaces.

Modulyss referenced The Social Hub as an example of a successful multifunctional space – a hospitality chain that combines communal living and working spaces for students, business travellers and freelancers.

Environments such as The Social Hub require wide-ranging flooring to enhance user experience, from textured biophilic-inspired tiles to brightly coloured carpets that delineate spaces and offer interior wayfinding.

Within the healthcare sector – such as inside hospitals – the same applies to ensure that patients and staff can access specific zones quickly and efficiently.

“At Modulyss, we think modular,” explained the brand

“At Modulyss, we think modular,” explained the brand. “These examples underscore a broader trend in design, emphasising adaptability and multifunctionality to enhance user experience across various sectors.”

To respond to the trend of ever-adapting multifunctional settings, Modulyss has launched its Plus range. Plus carpet tiles are integrated with the brand’s trademark ecoBACK PLUS backing, made with 85 per cent recycled and bio-based materials.

Plus brings together four iterations. Textura is a minimalist collection of calming hues, while the more varied Artus was informed by the patterns of different textiles. Monos is available in a wide variety of colours, and Forma is characterised by organic forms – hence its name.

“In a world where wellbeing is the new metric of success, and adaptability the only constant, flooring is no longer background,” concluded Modulyss. “It’s a bold, functional, sensory-first strategy. Flooring is the unsung hero of multi-functionality.”

Founded in 2010, Modulyss seeks to redefine interior spaces with transformative flooring.
